What is it about spending money that brings the worst out of people? The topic I want to discuss today is about prospective customers that use the promise of future business as a negotiating tool.
Any of you reading this who are actively involved in running your own business know exactly what I’m talking about. I don’t know if the people believe their fabrications or how they manage to keep a straight face or not crack up laughing when they are saying such nonsense. These folks say things like, my order is going to mean so much more business for you, or I have 4 orders I plan on doing. Really, so by your rationale I should give you a discount today because of what might happen in the future. What guarantees do I have from you that you will ever even make good on your promise of future business? Pardon my skepticism but you’re not the first person I have heard these same words from. I hear this same ridiculous spiel a few times each year. The reality is that if I give in and give you a discount today then you’re going to beat me up twice as hard the next time around. By the time my business with you is complete I will regret ever even accepting your business. Honestly I can kiss the thought of ever being able to make a solid profit from your orders goodbye and God forbid if you ever tell your friends about me because there’s not a doubt in my mind that you would also tell them about how you beat me up for a discount and they should do the same thing. It will be a down pour of discounts that I just can’t afford.
I’m not sure whether the people who use these tactics should be slapped or praised. It is a good idea from their point of view but they also set themselves up to be liars. I guess it really doesn’t matter as long as they saved some money though. I personally would rather pay full price then make myself look like an asshole (I do that enough already) but maybe that’s just me.
Until next time, be good to yourselves and each other. RB out.

Your group or organization has decided that they want to produce custom coins as their next promotional product and you’re wondering where to start. There is a series of questions that need to be answered to insure you’re getting an accurate quote, especially if you’re requesting challenge coin quotes from multiple manufacturers. I will assume that you have a minimum requirement of three quote requests for the sake of this blog post, as there are usually certain requirements for allocating company funds, which usually translates into receiving multiple bids from different vendors.
Educate yourself as much as possible. Make yourself aware of the terms used by vendors. Some vendors may call custom coins other things like, personalized coins, custom made coins, challenge coins, commemorative coins or custom challenge coins, which are all synonymous. A couple of other terms you should become familiar with are die cast and die struck. Die struck coins are typically more expensive because they are normally made of solid brass whereas die cast coins are typically made of zinc alloy which is a lower weight material. Die cast coins and die struck coins are not synonymous. The cost of material used to create a die cast coin is less expensive, which implies to me that their retail cost shouldn’t be the same either.
The questions that must be answered in order to receive an accurate quote are as follows. How many custom coins will be produced? What size and metal finish will the coin be? Will the coin have paint color? Will the coin be die struck or die cast? Will there be any additional features on the coin such as epoxy, sequential numbering or special edge? These questions are essential in determining the cost of your custom metal project as well as insuring that your custom coin quote requests from all vendors match the same specifications. Make sure that all vendors quote the exact same thing, while emphasizing die cast or die struck. Make sure you take the time to compare quotes apples to apples. I cannot emphasize this point enough. Don’t fall victim to assumptions. Don’t assume anything! Know what to expect so you can have peace of mind that the finished product you receive is exactly what you ordered.
The last recommendation I am going to make is; make sure you give yourself enough time to receive your order before your desired need by date and give your vendor enough time to fix anything that may go wrong. Every part of coin production takes time. There is the artwork phase, die or mould creation phase, striking or casting phase and painting / special features phase. Your custom coins will then need to be shipped. As you can see there is a vast array of potential problems that can disrupt your delivery time. Do your vendor a favor by giving them adequate time. I would suggest giving your vendor a minimum of forty five days. I know there are plenty of challenge coin suppliers advertising seven to ten day delivery time but that claim doesn’t encompass every coin feature. That ad is specifically targeted for coins with no paint color.
